hidden gem in magical san miguel de allende...

Sprinkled across the lush Sierra Madre Mountains, San Miguel de Allende glistens as one of Mexico’s most precious colonial towns. Narrow cobblestone streets pave the way to a magical destination that you will remember forever. Nestled amid the bougainvillea-studded facades, flower laden gardens and intimate courtyards is one of our favorite hidden gems: the Casa de Sierra Nevada.

Made up of six Spanish-colonial mansions that date back to the 1500's, this enchanting Orient-Express hotel exudes luxury in a laid-back and charming setting. A visit to this property is truly like stepping back in time. Each of it's rooms is uniquely decorated, blending historic furnishings with modern touches. Individual fireplaces, hand-stenciled walls, hand-painted tiled bathrooms and oversized copper bathtubs are just a few of the distinct elements guests can enjoy.

The hotel features two restaurants, both top-notch dining establishments in San Miguel. Casa del Parque features a relaxed atmosphere and is my recommendation for a leisurely, late lunch. Situated across the street from Parque Benito Juarez, Casa del Parque is known for its Mexican specialities and exotic flavors. Make sure to try the sopa azteca or mole de marilu! Their other restaurant, Andanza, is the only restaurant in San Miguel to be awarded the prestigious AAA Four Diamond Award (among several others). A great option for a more upscale dining experience, Andanza's cuisine combines regional flavors with traditional favorites. Whether dining in the restaurant's courtyard, wine room or private dining room-- guests will enjoy their meal while listening to a pianist or live trio. For a culinary treat- I highly recommend the Pan Seared Red Snapper with Pea-Lime Risotto!

And speaking of culinary delights, the hotel also has its own cooking school! Housed in an 18th century casa, Sazon, offers a number of classes ranging from regional specialities to traditional favorites. Classes are taught by a team of in-house chefs and the experience can include a trip to the local "mercado" to hand pick fresh produce and ingredients.

Laja Spa is the perfect way to unwind after a hard day of cooking or sightseeing in San Miguel. Named after the Laja River that flows through the surrounding mountains, the spa offers a variety of healing therapies and treatments. Set in a colonial and intimate setting, guests are pampered in style while enjoying signature features such as the “Prehispanic Experience”. To really engage in the culture, guests can experience the spiritual allure of one of Mexico's most honored ceremonies-- the Temazcal. The Temazcal is similar to a North American Indian sweat lodge where heated lava rocks are doused with herb-infused water, creating an aromatic, healing steam. The use of medicinal herbs and detoxifying minerals help eliminate accumulated toxins in the body. With a combination of Maya chants and meditation-- guests leave the experience feeling rejuvenated, purified and forever changed.

From romantic settings nestled in the gardens of their colonial mansions to rooftop terraces boasting breathtaking views of San Miguel, Casa de Sierra Nevada is also an ideal spot for a memorable and unique destination wedding. With full onsite catering, an experienced staff and a variety of venues- they can accommodate wedding parties of up to 300 guests and will help you every step of the way.

In short, the Casa de Sierra Nevada has it all. It's combination of understated elegance, superb service and old-world charm-- makes it one of our top picks in San Miguel de Allende.

Top 5 Places to Propose in 2012

How - and Where - to Pop the Question...

It’s one of life’s biggest quandaries. You’ve found “the one,” you have the perfect ring –but where to go to ask that life changing question? Every couple has their own, unique love story and their romantic getaway should reflect this. From quaint mountain villages, to secluded, sugary beaches, there are countless settings that conjure up images of romance. The key to finding that perfect spot is in the imagination and creating a “one of a kind experience.”

I’ve rounded up the destinations that top the list for places to propose in 2012...places you might not necessarily have thought of.

Romance on the high seas –

Most people agree that there is something romantic about a sunset stroll on the beach or simply being near the ocean. Take it a step further and add to the enchantment by embarking on the high seas with your beloved. Whether admiring the sea from a secluded corner on the bow of the ship to sharing an intimate, candlelit dinner on your private balcony, the options for romance (and an unforgettable proposal) are endless.

There are many great lines to choose from, each offering a variety of interesting itineraries. Whether it’s the Greek Isles, the Panama Canal or a private island in the Caribbean (such as Norwegian Cruise Line’s Great Stirrup Cay), dazzle your darling with a romantic itinerary at one of your ports of call.

Debuting a new collection of itineraries to some of the most romantic ports in the Caribbean, Costa Rica and Europe, Windstar Cruises - which operates a three-ship fleet of luxury yachts - is one of my top picks for a romantic voyage in 2012.

Runaway Bride Tip: Let the fresh ocean air lull you to sleep by booking a cabin with a verandah.

Wine Country -

It’s hard not to be intoxicated by romance while surrounded by the aromatic vineyards of California’s Wine Country. Boasting a quintessential blend of wineries, charming restaurants, intimate hotels and endless rolling hills, it offers the perfect setting in which to pop that very important question.

From 5-star resorts to informal inns, the valley is teeming with options. Since opening its doors in 2007, Solage Calistoga has been pleasing guests with an innovative spin on Napa Valley’s hospitality. With a Michelin-star rated restaurant, a celebrated spa, 83 ‘studio’ style accommodations and six suites- you might never make it off the property. You will pay for those pampering extras at luxury hotels, so Bed and Breakfasts are a good alternative for travelers on a budget. The Hennessey House features cozy accommodations and their caramel French toast is a consistent palate pleaser. Whether you’re enjoying a leisurely bike ride along quiet country lanes, savoring a gourmet picnic lunch or indulging in a five-course meal at a French restaurant, I guarantee you will be toasting to a lifetime of happiness together (with an award-winning Cabernet) because in a setting like this, the answer to that question is sure to be a resounding “yes.”

Runaway Bride Tip: Since a toast with sparkling wine will be in order, a visit to Domaine Chandon is a must.

London -

Who can’t help but get caught up in the romance of last year’s fairytale Royal Wedding in London. Between that and hosting this summer’s Olympic Games, this European capital is high on the list of “hot spots” for 2012. A proposal here doesn’t have to cost a lot of money because after all, it’s all about romance and memories. There are plenty of famous (and romantic) landmarks in this fascinating city offering unforgettable backdrops for that special moment.

For a “bird’s eyes” view of the historic city, hop onboard the London Eye – a giant Ferris wheel on the banks of the Thames River. To further take her breath away, pre-arrange priority boarding and a bottle of champagne. If you prefer, test the legend claiming that anyone getting engaged under the Statue of Eros at Piccadilly Circus at the stroke of midnight will be blessed with good luck and happiness throughout their marriage. Getting down on bended knee in Hyde Park - in a row boat on the Serpentine - also promises to deliver the ultimate fairy-tale setting.

Runaway Bride Tip: Be sure to slip in a trip to the romantic Cotswolds.

Buenos Aires -

Flavorful neighborhoods, provocative tangos, traces of the legendary Evita and never ending Malbec wines... are just a few of the things that make Buenos Aires one of the sexiest cities in the world. This South American hot spot is for lovers, providing the perfect background for a romantic rendezvous amid steamy nights.

The people in B.A. will welcome you with open arms as you explore its museums, stroll through historic sites, including Recoleta Cemetery, where Eva Perón is buried or enjoy a grilled meat parrillada for two. This is also the beef capital of the world. After dinner, set off to a milonga (local tango club) with your loved one and celebrate into the wee hours. Clubs here don’t get started until midnight. For a more intimate alternative, head to the waterfront in Puerto Madero and pop that important question under a starlit sky on the Puente de la Mujer. Set the mood for romance the next morning with a visit to Cafe Tortoni, the oldest coffee shop in the country, and take in its Old World Charm. The city is literally overflowing with romantic corners, alluring districts and enchanting spots. Love is definitely in the air in this cosmopolitan capital. Runaway Bride Tip: Staying at an Estancia (old fashioned Ranch) is a great option for experiencing this unique culture.

Puerto Vallarta -

The Pacific Coastline of Mexico is tailor-made for memorable proposals and nowhere is this more evident than in Puerto Vallarta. Once a tranquil fishing village, it has become a prized destination transformed – in the last 50 years - into a romantic hot spot. A diverse collection of hotels, shops, bars and restaurants dot the cobble stone streets of PV’s “romantic area”- set in the heart of Old Vallarta. Blessed with spectacular sunsets and 25 miles of golden beaches, it offers many vantage points from which to observe Mother Nature at her best. A magical place is Le Kliff. Perched on a cliff, overlooking the ocean, this popular restaurant offers a romance package for couples including a five-course meal, bottle of wine, exclusive use of the restaurant’s outdoor terrace and a private musical trio.

For a real treat, travel 45 minutes up the coast and pamper yourselves at the Four Seasons Punta Mita. Casita-style accommodations with beachfront or ocean views, secluded beaches and miles of natural surroundings make this the ideal spot to take that “special someone.” Runaway Bride Tip: Make that moment even more memorable with the Romantic Escape package which includes a candlelight dinner, relaxing rose petal bath and more.

Any of these choices are sure to inspire romance while promising memories that will last a lifetime.
